Allan Brown
June 5, 1935 – May 28, 2025
Allan "Brownie" Brown passed away peacefully at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family. A friend to many, Allan leaves behind his children: Wendy Terrier (the late Dwayne Terrier), Ray Brown (Ana), Linda Gentile (DJ), and Mike Brown; his former wife, Deanna Graves; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and literally thousands of friends, fans, and admirers. He truly was "The Unsinkable Allan Brown."
Allan's life was the stuff of legend. He dined and partied with celebrities, tycoons, royalty, and world-class criminals. A master of the one-liner, he had an uncanny ability to get to the heart of any matter with a simple yet nuanced, razor-sharp wit. He was also known to sing the occasional tune with close friends.
Raised in Terre Haute, Indiana, Allan graduated from Indiana State University before proudly serving in the United States Army. After relocating to South Florida, he started a family and soon found his passion for powerboat racing. His impressive performances on ocean racecourses around the world earned him a place among the sport's top performers. Following his racing career, he served as Chairman of the American Power Boat Association Offshore Category and was inducted into the Gulf Marine Racing Hall of Fame.
Allan's parallel career in marine sales, marketing, and engineering began at Challenger Marine in Miami. His passion for advancing high-performance boating products placed him at the heart of the burgeoning offshore performance industry. Career highlights included roles as General Manager at Donzi, Holman Moody, and Cary Marine; President and Founder of Nova Marine; Chief Engineer at Magnum Marine; President of Cougar; Director of Product Development at Cigarette; inventor and consultant at Teleflex Marine; Project Engineer for Gentry Transatlantic's record-breaking Gentry Eagle project; Director of Product Development at Stainless Marine; and Senior Engineering Fellow at Cyclone Power Technologies. He worked alongside many of the industry's greats, most notably the legendary and infamous Don Aronow.
His long partnership with designer Harry Schoell produced enduring innovations in vee hull design, influencing the pleasure boat market for over 50 years. Allan later championed the multi-hull catamaran concept, collaborating with British visionaries James Beard and Clive Curtis. His work helped bring their unique designs to the American market and refine construction techniques, transitioning from wood to aluminum. Within two years, Allan licensed one of their designs and created one of the first all-fiberglass catamarans under his FLIGHT Marine brand. These boats, affectionately nicknamed "Brownie Cats," marked a significant evolution in offshore racing and helped pave the way for modern multi-hull performance boats.
Never one to leave a problem unsolved, Allan also developed the hardware and accessories needed to endure the ever-increasing speed and demands of offshore racing. His constant pursuit of "better, faster, stronger" sparked a revolution in cockpit hardware, including the retractable stand-up/sit-down bolster seat, ergonomic throttles and grab handles, multiple steering solutions, and significant improvements in rigging standards for electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
Even in his later years, Allan remained actively involved in marine innovation and consulting, contributing to projects ranging from Richard Branson's Transatlantic record attempts to high-speed yacht ventures, television series concepts, and his much-celebrated book, Tales from Thunderboat Row, which recounted the seemingly endless adventures of his extraordinary life.
Allan Brown will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless people whose lives he touched through his generosity, humor, and relentless spirit.
His celebration of life will be held on September 27th in Tavernier at the Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Humane Society of the Upper Keys.
