Donald L. Mazzaia, 68, died peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2011, surrounded by his wife and children, in Sebastian, FL, where he lived for 10 years with his loving wife Joan C. Baribeault Mazzaia. Donald lost his battle with cancer, surrounded by his children, Christopher Mazzaia of S. Windham, CT, Julie Whipple of Bozrah, CT, and Sherry Kiely of Gales Ferry, CT. Donald also leaves behind daughter in law Stacey Mazzaia and Grandchildren Mia and Dominic, son in law Kevin Whipple and grandsons Matthew and Travis, son in law Kale Kiely and grandsons Curtis and Connor. Donald also leaves a brother, David of Muncie, IN, and several extended family members. Donald was born November 24, 1942 to Herwin Mazzaia and Jean Murray. He was a US Navy veteran, he worked for Electric Boat, and then for Pfizer of Groton, CT where he retired in December 2000. After retiring, Donald and Joan found more happiness and love of life in Sebastian, FL. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating, kayaking, and life with Joan and many friends during his retired years in FL. Donald was a life member of the Gales Ferry Fire Company where he was Fire Chief for many years. Donald sacrificed a great amount of time to his community for many years. Wherever he was, he was always eager to aid friends, neighbors, and his community without hesitation. Donald will be sorely missed by many.
A memorial service will be conduced at Seawinds Funeral Home in Sebastian, FL on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 1:00 pm. Reception will follow at the Sebastian VFW.
A memorial service will also be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry, CT with a reception gathering at the Gales Ferry Fire House, at a time and date to be determined.
