Elsie Margaret Eggen died peacefully at home on March 12, 2024, surrounded by family. Elsie was born July 3, 1926, in Baltimore Maryland, to John and Helen Gertz. She had one brother, Henry who died 1996.
After high school, she worked as a clerk at Fort Meade, Maryland. She worked for the State Department in Washington D.C. during WWII and then enrolled at the University of Chicago, meeting Douglas Eggen, a biophysics student.
They married September 9, 1951, having three children Steve (1954), Karen (1957) and Susan (1958). After his graduation they moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. Elsie was a successful realtor in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1968 to 1985. Douglas worked (as a professor of pathology) at LSU school of medicine in cardiac disease research until his retirement in 1988.
Elsie and Doug moved to Sebastian, Florida in 1989. Elsie loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. She volunteered at Sebastian Library and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a generous individual and mentor.
She is predeceased by husband Douglas (2012, 62 years of marriage) and daughter Susan (McIntosh), 2011. Elsie is survived by son Steven (Joan) and daughter Karen Pilman (John), nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Cremation Services are entrusted to Seawinds Funeral Home.
