Obituary

Emily J. Carrigan, age 89 - formerly of Edenville, Michigan and since 2005 in Barefoot Bay, Florida, passed away on July 31st at Sebastian River Medical Center. Her loving family is comforted thinking of her happiness at rejoining with Flip, her much missed husband, in their eternal life together in Heaven.

Emily was born on June 14, 1932 in Braddock, Pennsylvania to Vincent and Rose (Tamino) Ruffolo. She graduated in 1949 from Homestead High School, and received her degree as a Registered Nurse in 1952 from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, both in Pennsylvania. She met Ralph "Flip" Carrigan on a blind date, set up by Emily's nursing school roommate and the roommate's U.S. Navy boyfriend who was serving with Flip; it was mutual love-at-first-sight. They were married on April 11, 1953 in West Mifflin, PA; a happy and contented marriage lasting for 48 years. She was employed at Mid-Michigan Medical Center (formerly Midland Hospital) for over 25 years and was a caring and respected RN. It was not unusual for any of her children growing up to have our last name recognized by people she had nursed, and to hear stories of how grateful they were for her care.

Shopping and fashion were much enjoyed pastimes in Emily's life. She was a master at coordinating an outfit from the top of her always styled head to the tips of her pedicured toes, including the perfect accessories and often matching manicure. She loved to hop in the car with Flip, and take trips to northern Michigan or to Pennsylvania and Ohio to visit family. In later years, they enjoyed time in Alaska and Italy, and she joined family members in travel to the Netherlands and many of the State Parks of the U. S. West. She loved new experiences, dining out and spending time with her family – they are so grateful that she was able to do many of those things almost to the very end. Her Catholic faith was truly meaningful to her and she served many roles in her churches through the years; the most enjoyable for her and others was in adding her beautiful soprano voice to the church choirs.

Surviving Emily are her five children: Shannon (Edward) Vasicek of Ada, Michigan; Kathleen Abbey of Fellsmere, Florida – Mom's much appreciated "heart" and guardian angel who was unselfishly committed to her care and happiness in the 16 years since our father passed; Kelly (Mark) Runyon of Austin, Texas; Kevin (Juliet) Carrigan of Waterloo, Illinois; and Colleen (Jeff) Biggs of Sanford, Michigan. Also her grandchildren: Laina (Michael) Mills, Brett (Brooke) Vasicek, Kaci Abbey, Jordan Abbey, Tracy Runyon, Erin Runyon, Sam Carrigan, Alex Carrigan, Emily Carrigan, Sean Carrigan, Evan Carrigan, and Brenna Baxter. And her great-grandchildren: Greyson Mills, Cooper Cannon and Wesley Vasicek. She was pre-deceased by her husband in 2005, and by her sister, Helen Minich, in 2019.

A private, family funeral is being planned for a later date; internment to be in The New Edenville Township Cemetery. Anyone considering a donation is asked to consider her favorite charity: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, registered under the name Emily J. Carrigan Memorial.
