IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frank T.
Mandello
October 12, 1938 – June 11, 2023
On June 11, 2023, Frank Mandello died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at the home he shared with his wife, Lillian (nee Libasci), in Sebastian, FL. After a heroic battle with cancer, Frank faced death the same way he lived his life; with courage, strength, and humor.
Frank was born on October 12, 1938 in Manhattan, NY, to Fannie (nee Spallo) and Thomas Mandello. He was the fourth of six siblings; Salvatore, Santa, Vivian, Thomas, and Jeanette. He met Lillian when they were kids, playing stoop ball in the neighborhood. Several years after joining the Army as a Military Chef in Germany, they were married on April 26, 1958 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Brooklyn, NY while he was on a requested furlough. They raised their two children, Rosemarie and Chris, in Brooklyn where he worked for Gil Syrup. After they moved to Hollywood in the late sixties, Frank started his own business, Fashion Glass & Mirrors. In 2018, to celebrate fifty years of marriage, their children and grandchildren planned a surprise second wedding for them, where they danced to "I Can't Stop Loving You" by Don Gibson.
Frank never shied away from the fact that even though his life was good, he also endured hard times. On March 24, 1984, his sobriety journey began. During his 39 years of recovery, he touched the lives of countless people who he sponsored and supported throughout his years in AA.
Frank is remembered by his loved ones as a generous leader who never failed to offer a hand, whether it was to help a neighbor or ask for a dance. He was a baker, a sports fan, and an inspiration. Always ready with a joke or wisecrack, laughter was a gift he gave himself as well as his family and friends.
During his retirement, Frank's love of the sea steered him to buy a boat. His years of guiding others helped him learn to be the captain of his own ship. He was at peace on the water, as his loved ones know he is now. Family meant the world to him, and he is survived by his devoted wife, Lillian; his two children and their spouses: Rosemarie and Frank; Chris and Judy. His adoring grandchildren and their partners: Miranda and Joey, Danny and Deserey, Stephanie and Jeff, and Lauren and Gabe. He was known as "Grandpa Zoop" to his great-grandchildren: Kiley, Jonah, Aubrey, Jordan, Bria, and Vivian. He will also be missed by his surviving sisters-in-law Kathleen Modica (nee Libasci) and Vita Contino (nee Libasci), and his nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
