Obituary

Gerda Christa Grathwohl, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. She was born on July 31, 1936, in Berlin, Germany, and came of age during a time of great hardship as her homeland was torn apart by war. Despite the challenges, Gerda's resilience and strength carried her family through the turmoil of post-war Europe. Her family eventually made the brave journey from East to West Germany, settling in the town of Hamelin.

At the age of 20, Gerda embarked on a new life across the ocean, sailing to the United States with the dream of a better future. Sponsored by the Lutheran Church, she settled in Brooklyn, New York. It was during a visit to the Roseland Dance Hall that she met her lifelong love, Herbert Grathwohl.

Gerda and Herbert built a beautiful life together in North Massapequa, New York, where they raised three children—Stephen, Sally, and Carol. After more than 25 years, they relocated to Sebastian, Florida in 1987, a place Gerda grew to love deeply. She found joy in the natural beauty of Florida—its flowers, trees, birds, and wildlife.

A gifted cook and baker, Gerda made everything seem effortless. Her passions were many: gardening, swimming, dancing, card games, beach days, and her favorite casino slot machines enjoyed with a glass of wine. But above all, Gerda took the greatest pride in caring for her home and family.

Gerda is survived by her three children: Stephen (Kathy), Sally (Maureen), and Carol (Joseph), and by four grandchildren whom she adored: Erich and Kurt Grathwohl, and Kyle Russo and Kelly Amore. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Heidi Reimer of Germany, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she held close to her heart.
Her warmth, humor, and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Gerda lived a life full of determination, grit, strength, and unconditional love, leaving behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
