Obituary

Glenn ("Pat") Goodfellow, 83, of Sebastian, died Sunday, January 25 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

He was born in Syracuse, New York on March 17, 1942, and grew up in Chittenango, about 30 miles east. He was the oldest of eleven children born to Mary Arlene Wallace and Glen Goodfellow, and having been born on St. Patrick's Day, was nicknamed "Pat" from birth. Pat attended Chittenango schools and graduated high school in 1959. He then attended SUNY Canton and graduated with an associate's degree in 1961. He received his bachelors' degree from SUNY Utica-Rome in 1976 and finally received his master's degree in organizational development from American University in
Washington, DC in 1987.

Pat married Carol Sabloski Schwedes on August 5, 1977.

He retired in 1997 as Manager of Human Resource Development, after 36 years of employment with Carrier Corporation (later United Technologies) in Syracuse. Following his retirement, Pat and Carol moved into their 5th wheel travel trailer and toured the United States for five years. They came "off the road" in 2002 when they settled in Sebastian and bought a home in Park Place. Their love of travel continued as they took numerous cruise trips throughout the years, a wonderful trip to Italy and Greece for their 35th wedding anniversary, and as officers in the operation of Value Travel, a home-based travel agency they had for ten years. Though retired from full-time work and play, Pat continued to work as an Access Control Officer for Bermuda Bay on USA1A in Indian River Shores, FL.

While his sons were growing up, Pat was involved in their lives through the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Cubmaster for their respective packs, and later as Scoutmaster to their troops. He taught scouting skills on numerous adult leader training courses throughout the years, and this culminated in conducting two Woodbadge Advanced Leader Training courses, high honors, indeed. Additionally, he served as an adult leader trainer at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for 2 years. He was awarded the District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver by the Hiawatha Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the highest award given on the Council level.

Pat's volunteer work did not stop there. He was instrumental in starting the Senior Activity Center of Sebastian and served several years as treasurer and board member. He gave freely of his time and talent to First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach, where he and his wife were active members.

During his retirement, Pat was a hobbyist silversmith. He made over 50 beautiful, handcrafted jewelry items each year to give as Christmas gifts to each female family member, including the most recently born babies. Pat was a life-long student of history, having been born in the aftermath of World War II. He had a true love of learning.

Pat is survived by his loving wife Carol, two sons, Gregg (Kelly) of St. Robert, MO and Michael, of Sebastian, a daughter Susan Spurrier Sessions (Keith) of Louisville, KY, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by seven sisters and one brother, their spouses, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, one brother and one sister.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach on February 28 at 10:30 am, with interment of ashes in the church's McClellan Memorial Garden.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the building fund of First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Blvd., Vero Beach, FL 32960 or VNA Hospice, 901 37th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
