IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James V.
Miller
February 8, 1928 – March 8, 2020
James Vedder Miller was born to Jesse Marie Vedder and Carl Miller in Amsterdam, New York on February 8th, 1928. Although his mother and father divorced when Jimmy was just a baby, he had a very happy childhood. Growing up in his Grandfather's home in upstate New York with his mother and and his Aunt Ethel and Aunt Edith, Jimmy wanted for nothing. He had all the love he needed. When Jimmy became school age, his mother and her sisters all moved to New York City where Jimmy attended public school, he would return to his grandfather's home upstate every summer. It was around the time that Jimmy was 10 that his mother fell in love with Joseph Stephens and they married. Jimmy loved Joe as if he was his own father and affectionately called him "Pop". The new family bought a home on the water in Oceanside, New York, where they enjoyed many happy family times together. Growing up on the water instilled in Jim a love for the bay and sailing that stayed with him for the rest of his life. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in October of 1950. He was stationed in Germany until his Honorable release in 1952. When he came back home to New York, he got a job with the New York Carpenters Union. He learned the trade of carpentry and excelled at it. He was happy. When his mom and pop asked him to go to Florida with them to build them a winter home, his destiny was sealed. It was in Deland, Florida that he met the love of his life, Barbara Bennett. They fell in love and were married June 12th, 1956 in Baldwin, New York, at the Methodist Church. Starting their new life together as a married couple, Jim decided to become a custom home builder. James V. Miller Custom Builder built their first home in West Islip, New York. It would be the first of many custom homes that he would build in the West Islip area. In October of 1958, their daughter, Judith Jessine was born. Four years later, they would be blessed with a son that they named Edwin James. While living in West Islip, Jim and Barbara made many lifelong friendships. Again his destiny was sealed when his mom and pop decided to retire on Shelter Island, New York. Jim built his mom and pop their retirement home in 1967. From that time on, until their deaths, that house and Shelter Island became a big part of Jim and Barbara's life. They loved their time on the Island surrounded by family. They fished and sailed and clammed in West Neck Bay. They enjoyed many wonderful gatherings with friends and family. Together, they made wonderful memories. In 1969 Barbara's allergies to the Long Island weather became to much for her. Also, her mother in Deland , FLorida was not doing very well health wise. The decision was made that they would move to Florida. Their love and devotion to one another never wavered during those uncertain times when they were starting over. They moved to Orlando before Disney World! Jim started building homes in Orlando and they lived and worked there until they decided to retire in a small coastal town called Sebastian on the east coast of Florida. It was there that Jim built his last home for his bride. They were so happy, they enjoyed Sebastian and made many wonderful friends. They enjoyed their grandson Jaret, and the laid back fishing community. They became "snowbirds" and traveled to Shelter Island in the summers. They enjoyed their many friends and family in both Shelter Island and Sebastian. They made memories together. After Barbara died in February 2014, Jim missed her so much. He still enjoyed all his blessings in life, but his true love, and reason for living had diminished. He died peacefully in his home 6 years later. He left behind his loving chilren , ED Miller (Julia) their daughter Gabby of Hobe Sound, FL. Judy Moskal (Matthew), their son Jaret, of Hobe Sound Fl. His loving cousin, Jesse, her husband , Jack Lacombe of Gifford, NH and Shelter Island, NY. Their children John Lacombe of Hilton Head SC. Beth Shafer and her two children Stephen and Sam of Portsmith, NH. His friends in Sebastian. His friends in Long Island and Shelter Island. Jim's smile , his wonderful gift of gab, his good nature will be missed by all.
