Katherine Helen
Wegel
July 27, 1944 – May 31, 2026
Katherine Wegel, 81, of Sebastian, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 31, 2026, with her beloved husband by her side.
Born on July 27, 1944, in Hackensack, New Jersey, Kathy was the daughter of William and Doris McGuire. She married Frank Wegel in 1970, and together they made their home in Frenchtown, New Jersey, where they raised their family before retiring to Sebastian, Florida, in 1993.
Before her marriage, Kathy worked as an engineering aide for the New Jersey Department of Transportation. She later devoted herself to her family as a loving wife and mother. Kathy was deeply passionate about gardening and the environment, earning the distinction of Master Gardener. She spent countless hours nurturing her gardens and sharing her knowledge and appreciation of nature with others.
Kathy loved exploring the world and traveling with family and friends. She treasured time spent around the table playing cards—especially Rummy—and enjoyed many memorable ladies' nights out with friends and playing Mah Jongg.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Frank Wegel; her daughters, Christina Hawley of Frenchtown, New Jersey, and her children, Grant and Josephine; and Carol Boyle and her husband, Kevin Jr., of Alexandria, Virginia, and their children, Erin and Kevin III. She is also survived by her brother, Michael McGuire and his wife, Patricia; and her sister, Nancy Wade and her husband, Grady.
She was predeceased by her infant brother, William McGuire, and her brother, Daniel Joseph McGuire.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Florida Native Plant Society or the Environmental Learning Center. The family also encourages friends and loved ones to honor Kathy's memory by pulling invasive plants and weeds from their gardens and taking a moment to think of her.
