Stubbe
September 7, 1928 – March 19, 2024
Richard J. Stubbe, 95 years old passed away peacefully on March 19, 2024 at Pelican Landing Assisted Living Facility. He was the widower of Barbara J. Stubbe, they were married in 1962 and shared 54 years of marriage together. They lived in Commack, New York, moved to Wading River, then retired and moved to the beautiful mountains of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Diedrich and Clara Stubbe. As a young teenager, Richard was involved as a "spotter" in the Civil Air Patrol searching for submarines off the Long Island sound during World War Two.
Richard served in the United States Air Force from 1948 through 1952 including 2 1/2 years of foreign service. He graduated from C.W. Post with a bachelors in engineering. He was employed at Grumman Aerospace in Calverton, New York for 35 years as an aeronautical engineer.
In his earlier years his hobbies included woodworking, gardening and creating beautiful stained glass pieces. In retirement he volunteered in the United States Forestry Service maintaining trails and bridges in Pisgah National Forest for 15 years. He was also a math tutor for young students for 22 years.
Richard had an adventurous and exciting life and a passion for traveling. In his later years his greatest happiness was to share his life stories with his grandchildren. He wrote emails to them about his life growing up and all of his experiences. Through Storyworth, two books were published. He was a gentle soul and was loved by many.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Holmes, husband Calvin Holmes, son Douglas Stubbe, wife Lynn Stubbe and 5 grandchildren.
A Celebration of life will be later this year.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Richard may be made to Space Coast Honor Flight, a 501(c)(3) organization and/or via the website MYGYAC.ORG in support of "Beyond Special K Senior Program".
