Obituary

Sam T. Joyce (Tod), 63, life long resident of Vero Beach and Fellsmere, FL, met God on December 30th, 2018 with all of his family, and close friends by his side. He fought a hard battle against stage 3  Multiple Myeloma for two years, before he was called home. Although he faced many trials and tribulations with his health, he never let those challenges interfere with his joyful, loving, and comedic outlook on life. Even in what seemed to be his toughest moments, he fought through with a smile on his face and a catch line ready to go. One of his favorite's being "glad you got to see me" whenever saying goodbye to a visiting friend. It was a phrase his family and friends looked forward to and expected to hear every time they got the chance to visit, and he never let them down. Sam was born March 22nd, 1955 in Vero Beach, FL and adopted by his loving parents, Emily Elizabeth Austin and Sam T. Joyce. He grew up with his sister, Deborah Joyce, always by his side. His father served as an Indian River County sheriff before his passing, which was something he was immensely proud of. Sam is survived by his son, Scott Joyce, 32 whom he loved dearly. No matter what ranch chore or mechanical mishap they were working on together, he was always elated just to have his son by his side. 8 years ago, Tod married the love of his life, Barbara A. Manning Crews and continued living his life on the ranch and assisting her in running their Equestrian school at Crews Cloverleaf Stables. It was here that he earned the title of "Mr. Fix it". Whenever a student needed help, whether it be a boost up onto the horse or a broken saddle, Sam was always the first one there to help. He was always a hard worker and strived to keep the ranch in the best condition possible, which was no light task. He had a way of making sure everything was always handled, and took pride in his work on the ranch. Sam and Barbara loved to take cruises any chance they could and basked in the time they got to spend together out at sea. He was a step father to two daughters; Kimberly Crews-Quigley (formerly married to Dennis Quigley), and Lynne Kindler (married to Kenny Kindler). From these step daughters, he gained his beautiful grandchildren, Carson, Cory, Taylor, Tori, and Devon. He loved them dearly and went above and beyond for their happiness and to give them the best childhood possible. He engineered and welded a swamp buggy from scratch to take the them on "buggy rides" out in the pastures, through mud holes. This buggy soon became a staple at every family event, and was even enjoyed by every single riding student during summer camps. It is the foundation for the happy memories of so many people out at the ranch, and is something he will always be remembered and appreciated for. In addition to his immediate family, Sam shared a special relationship with his cousins, Lilly, Jim and Bella. He adored Bella, and even remodeled a room in their home for her to have when she visited. Sam was also apart of a Boilmaker and Blacksmith Union, in which he made so many life long friendships through. It was apart of his life he was always extremely proud of and something that made him the man he was. His life as a cattleman on the ranch led him to meeting on of his very closest friends, Ken Vickers, who he shared countless memories with. Ken would visit Sam every day after work, which is something he looked forward to all day. Sam's absolute favorite thing was watching NASCAR, in which he was always rooting for Dale Earnhart Sr. and Junior. He also enjoyed hosting barbeques out at the ranch, surrounded by all of his favorite people. He considered himself blessed to have been able to share one last holiday season in his home with his family and friends. Although he was called home at the young age of 63, Sam lived a full and exciting life with enough love to last a lifetime. All of his family and friends feel so blessed to have had such a unique man impact their lives in too many ways to count. He was a family centered man, who rejoiced in the accomplishments of others. Sam was the kind of man who could hold a conversation with anyone, and made friends everywhere he went. He will continue to be loved by countless individuals, and will be greatly missed. His celebration of life will be held this Saturday, January 5th 12pm at the place he loved the most- Crews Cloverleaf Ranch.
