On September 4th, 2025, Dr. Susan Mary Taggart, age 89 of Fort Pierce, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, education and devotion to her community.
Born in Maryland to Paul and Clare Taggart. Sue was the youngest of 5 children. She was preceded in death by her four brothers, Tom, John, Paul, and Basil and four nephews, Clark Taggart, George Taggart, John Taggart Jr., and William B. Taggart. She is survived by 11 beloved nieces and nephews: Tom, Anne , Richard , Ken, Bob, Will, Barbara, Kelly, Colleen, Susan, and Kathleen.
Sue was a trailblazer in education. She began her career as a Catholic nun devoted to teaching. She moved to Florida in the late 1960s to serve as Principal of Mary Immaculate Catholic High School in Key West. After leaving the religious order, she moved to Fort Pierce to become Principal of John Carroll Catholic High School. Her impact continued during her distinguished tenure at Indian River Community College where she held numerous leadership roles: Chairman of the English Department, Director of Guidance and Admissions, Director of Arts and Sciences, and Provost of both the Mueller Campus and Saint Lucie West Campuses. She was a proud Seminole earning her Doctorate Degree from Florida State University in 1988. She spent her career challenging students to achieve their highest potential. Her vision helped shape programs that enriched both the academic environment and the broader Treasure Coast community.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sue was deeply devoted to her friends, family, and her faithful dogs- Pat, Mike and most recently Benny. She was active in charitable organizations such as Safe Space and remained a steadfast supporter of John Carroll High School and the Catholic Church. Known for her fierce spirit and determination, generous heart and unwavering loyalty, she touched countless lives with her wisdom and warmth.
Sue's memory will be cherished by her family, friends, and the many students and colleagues whose lives she influenced. Her legacy lives on in the institutions she strengthened and the people she inspired.
A Funeral Mass will be held on October 11, 2025 at 10 AM at St. Anastasia Catholic Church Fort Pierce Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to John Carroll Catholic High School. Online condolences may be shared at www.seawindsfh.com
