Obituary

Vernon Barnes passed away on August 21,2018 surrounded by family at the William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay Florida.

Vern was born in Pittsburgh PA, where his parents owned a Bowling Alley and Roller Skating Rink. He became very talented in both, and won many bowling tournaments over the years. He even made an appearance on TV's Bowling for dollars. His parents later owned a record store and recording studio, which influenced his involvement with the School Drama Club, appearing in several plays.
He attended 4 years at Bowling Green University in Ohio, where he met and married the love of his life, his wife of 66 years, Joanne. Vern attended the Arty School at Fort Sill Oklahoma and became an excellent marksman. He competed in many National rifle matches over the next decade, and even qualified as an alternate on the US Olympic Team. He proudly served our country in The Korean War, and afterward in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Captain.

Vern and Joanne had 4 children, Barbara Litz (Bob) of NY, Cathy Thoryke (Pete) of Ohio, Sandi Gehrke (Gary) of Sebastian and Scott Barnes  (Darcy) of Colorado. He was a proud grandfather to 7 grandchildren, and less than a month ago to a great grandson.

Vern served as coach to both his son and grandson's soccer teams, and it was a true passion. He was a member of the VFW, and active in American Legion Sebastian Post 189,  serving on their Honor Guard for several years. Vern was also involved with the Posts' Sea Scout Troop 501, and passionate about mentoring young people to be positive thinking, good citizens.

He was truly a person who gave back to his family, friends, community and very proudly, his country.

Vern, Dad, Grandpa will be greatly missed, but has left the world a little better place.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate Vernon's life by gathering for a Celebration Of Life service at Riverview Park, U.S. Hwy 1 & C.R. 512, Sebastian, FL, on Friday, August 24, 2018 from 1:30 to 4:00 pm.
